We are excited to announce that Edmonds Marshall McMahon has been included in The Times Best Law Firms 2023 in the category of Financial Crime, Fraud & Regulatory. This list recognises the most highly regarded legal practices in England and Wales, all of which were chosen by other law firms.
The Times assembled this list in collaboration with Statista, an international market research firm. Statista conducted a survey among legal professionals, asking solicitors and barristers to recommend the best firms in categories covering business, public and private-client law. This is the second year that Edmonds Marshall McMahon has featured in The Times Best Law Firms and we are delighted to receive recognition once again.
Edmonds Marshall McMahon is the UK’s first and only specialist private prosecution firm. As The Times reported in September 2021, we secured the conviction of property developer Eli Taktouk who defrauded investors out of £2,500,000. After a four week private prosecution, Mr Taktouk was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for fraud and forgery offences against our client. As The Times list explains we continue to act for the for the clients in this case following the successful prosecution of Mr Taktouk and as a result have been instructed on similar matters involving fraudulent large-scale property redevelopments over the past year.
A highlight of the year was the successful prosecution of Annette Wilcox on behalf of Macmillan cancer support. Mrs Wilcox purported to be raising funds for Macmillan, but was instead keeping the proceeds for herself. Her conviction and sentence of 12 months imprisonment was significant given the impact this type of fraud has on the charity sector, preventing them from helping those most in need. The case further illustrates a growing trend for private prosecutions being brought by charities as state prosecutors continue to suffer from a lack of resources.
