EMM secures return of $1.725 million in Bitcoin, through ethical hackers

Background to the Bitcoin recovery

Edmonds Marshall McMahon has helped secure the return of 20.00444711 BTC to its original owner after a six-week recovery process involving ethical hackers, detailed blockchain analysis and robust legal review.

On 23 September 2026, EMM secured the recovery of 20.00444711 BTC for our client, worth approximately $1.725 million as at that date. The client had suffered the largest loss within this particular Coldcard recovery group when his Bitcoin was transferred as part of the Coldcard fraud on 31 July 2026. The recovery represented 100% of their loss and was made without any deduction. The funds represented a substantial part of the client’s life savings.

This result was achieved after an extraordinary six-week period in which EMM worked with ethical hackers and a US statutory trust to establish the client’s ownership of the BTC and secure its safe return.

Our client was quoted as saying…

“When the Bitcoin disappeared, I believed my life savings had gone forever. To have it returned to me today is overwhelming. I am immensely grateful to the ethical hackers and to everyone who worked to establish that the Bitcoin was mine and bring it safely home. There are literally no words I can put here to express how thankful I am to you.”

A rigorous ownership-verification process

EMM’s specialist technical and legal team assembled and presented a detailed evidential record establishing the client’s original ownership of the Bitcoin, including tracing through privacy-focused CoinJoin transactions. Alongside forensic blockchain analysis and historical exchange and account records, the process involved verification challenges requiring the client to sign cryptographic messages using addresses associated with the unauthorised transactions, thereby demonstrating control of the corresponding private keys. The team also verified the relevant wallet derivation paths.

The trustee applied a clear and convincing evidence standard, requiring corroboration from more than one independent source. Following an independent legal review, the client was confirmed as the original owner and accepted as a qualified claimant. With the assistance of the ethical hackers, sometimes known as “white hats”, the Bitcoin was then returned by an on-chain transfer to a newly secured receiving address, without charge, deduction or set-off.

The transformative potential of responsible, ethical hackers

Ashley Fairbrother, Partner and joint head of EMM’s Crypto and Digital Asset Fraud practice, said:

“There is often an understandable focus on the legal and ethical complexities surrounding ethical-hacker interventions. As a crypto asset recovery lawyer, this case shows the other side of that debate. Through extraordinary technical work by the ethical hackers, followed by a rigorous and independently reviewed legal process involving our team, more than $1.7 million in Bitcoin has been restored to its original owner. For our client, as well as being a harsh lesson in cybersecurity, this was the recovery of a substantial part of his financial future and, most likely, a defining moment in his life.”

The outcome in this case stands in marked contrast to recent cases in which actors described as white hats have sought substantial bounties or used their control of compromised assets as leverage. Here, the objective was to safeguard vulnerable assets and place them within a structured recovery process designed to identify and verify their lawful owners.

The case illustrates the genuinely transformative impact that responsible white-hat activity can achieve when technical intervention is supported by a transparent legal framework, robust safeguards and an exacting evidential process. It also demonstrates the importance of lawyers, forensic investigators, technical specialists and independent trustees working together to convert control of vulnerable cryptoassets into a defensible, secure return to their rightful owners.
